The Steampunk Recycled Metal Miniature Sculpture Project
October 6, 2024

Sponsored by DeCosmos Fine Arts Society

Winning Sculpture by Joyce Grenon

STEAMPUNK RECAP:

The Steampunk Event met expectation of attendance with approximately 24 sculptors from within DeCosmos as well as general public. The majority of the sculptures were on display from October 16th – November 1st at the Parksville City Hall Atrium. Some were not displayed either by the artists choice, or in the case of two drop-ins who just came to ‘try it out’ and left their unfinished pieces behind. The submitted sculptures were photographed and distantly judged on October 31, 2024 by Dotun Popoola, a contemporary Nigerian artist (sculptor) who specializes in synergetic metal sculpting. He creates pieces of art works from discarded scrap metals. His works are focused on transforming trash to treasures, rubbish to rubies and waste to wealth by repurposing wastes that threaten the ecosystem.

An award of $50 was bestowed on: Joyce Grenon creator of the sculpture in the photo above.  Many Congratulations to her and to all participants; every piece was worthy in so many ways!

Verbal feedback from attendees ranged from ‘challenging’ to ‘fun’, having ‘the best assortment of junk’, and ‘make sure you tell your organization how much we enjoyed it and how well it was done’.

Thank you to DeCosmos members for your support, to the volunteers, and to the sculptors.

Rosemary and Carol also wish to thank Pattiann Withapea, BC Culture Days coordinator,  for her belief in Steampunk and her vision and guidance in making this happen.
